Berke:
What does the word karifurava mean?
Karifurava:
My artistic nickname comes from the first word that I learned from Japanese and means cauliflower. Cauliflower is a symbol of health, happiness and prosperity. I liked the name that sounds serious, but if you already know its meaning, it simply means a vegetable :) and it is simply funny. I began to sign my murals with this nickname, and then I started using it as a signature in my paintings and illustrations.
Berke:
What did the beginnings of your work look like?
Karifurava:
As a child, I drew many vases, suns, rainbow and cars :). Later, in junior high school / high school, I painted a lot of pastels. Then I was fascinated by surreal topics, traditional tattooing and Asian art. After graduating from high school, I went to economic studies, where I was called a "sketchbook". During the lesson, instead of urgently noting, I drew women in various poses, fat men, and motives that can now be described as "ignorant style". After the second year of study at the WSB Academy, I studied at the Faculty of Graphics of the Academy of Fine Arts in Wrocław and focused mainly on the drawing, painting and workshop graphics. I put a lot of emphasis on drawing naked characters. For a long time, my routine was to start the day with sketching a series of various poses, hands and feet.
Berke:
Are your works reproducing real events?
Karifurava:
It is rather my fantasy and the sum of the things I have experienced, read and I believe in. I often present visions that come to my mind before going to bed when I focus, meditate or when I have a hangover;) [laughs]: But I try not to drink alcohol :)
Berke:
Where does your style come from?
Karifurava:
I owe it many years of work. I have developed my own design process, which I have been constantly improving for several years, and it all starts with a handwritten drawing.
Berke:
What influences you as an artist?
Karifurava:
The music I listen to. I like melodic techno and chillout electronic music. I also compose many songs, collect instruments and produce music in a melodic techno atmosphere. I am definitely under the influence of artists whom I am a fan, I really like literature related to life after death and esotoric themes.
Berke:
What inspires you?
Karifurava
I think that travel and meeting various people are the most inspiring.
And the place I like to visit most often and I don't bore Berlin.
Berke:
What is the bedroom for you?
Karifurava:
The leitmotifs of my work are usually naked women. My paintings and illustrations are also characterized by a very strong but limited color palette. I like to surround myself with simple objects in my form because they don't impose their character. Then he feels free. The bedroom is a place for me where I start my creative journey. It has to be light, simple and comfortable. Before bedtime he writes everything in my head, and then shows it in his works. In Berke furniture. I like this ascetic simplicity that is not imposed on form. The perfect project is for me Shortie bed. The precious wood material goes perfectly with the smell of my canvases [laughs]
